Renovated school complex in Lot

In the centre of Lot, the municipal primary school had long served as a cornerstone of the village, surrounded by familiar landmarks such as the church, the old town hall, and the Scheppers factory. The 1933 boys’ school and the 1960s Blokbos building each contributed to the village’s identity and formed the foundation for the renewal of the school site.

LAVA chose to preserve and integrate both buildings, recognising their spatial generosity, architectural character, and sustainable material use as valuable assets for the future. With a clear programmatic hierarchy, thoughtful phasing, and respectful interventions, a contemporary learning environment was created—one that felt both familiar and forward-looking.

The new school did not break with the past but built upon it. The result was a sustainable, functional, and welcoming place for learning, firmly rooted in the heart of the village—both physically and symbolically.
